“Solutions for Pet Problems” – lead letter in Your Views in
The Oklahoman on October 21, 2005
As a long time volunteer for the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter and founder of Best Friends of Pets, I was pleased Bryan Dean wrote of the pet overpopulation problem in “City Hopes to Save More Pets’ Lives” (feature, October 12). This is a tragic problem that costs taxpayers $2.5 million and results in the deaths of over 15,000 pets each year. Many of these are healthy, adoptable pets, not the “mangy mutts” everyone assumes. Best Friends offers solutions through “SNAP,” its year round metro Spay/Neuter Assistance Program, and by providing free pet ID tags to all pet owners. Best Friends also takes shelter pets to various adoption outreach locations several times a month and provides educational information on many pet issues. Together, we can greatly reduce the needless destruction of these poor lives.
